Here at Church in the Canyon we have an exciting opportunity: kids.  Here is a breakdown of kids who regularly attend by age/grade:

High School – 5
Middle School – 4
Elementary School – 3
Kindergarten – 2
Infant through Pre-K – 7
On the Way! – 3

Currently, the only ministries that we as a church have for our kids are the children’s message during the morning worship service, Toddler Praise, and one Sunday School class that I currently teach “family devotions style.” Given what have been low numbers of kids coming to Sunday school, the family devotions style that I have used has been working well. It is not, however, ideally suited to making disciples of all of our kids. As we see a cluster of kids growing up here, are we willing to grow our Sunday School ministry with them?
It is easy to say, “Of course we will!” But, as Johnny Unitas (the great Baltimore quarterback) once famously said, “Talk is cheap.” We need people just like you to do the following three things:

  1.  Pray – ask the Lord of the Harvest to send workers. Matthew 9:3
  2.  Serve – whether or not you see yourself as particularly gifted with kids, do what you can!  God is honored when his people see a need and fill it with whatever abilities or inclinations God has given them.
  3. Gather – are there kids in your neighborhood? I bet there are! Invite them to church.

As Christians, many times we intentionally avoid anything that smacks of a “build it and they will come” approach to life and ministry. But in some situations, we must build it or they won’t come. We have a lot of room to increase our ministry to kids here at Church in the Canyon. Let’s do all that we can – which may be significantly more than we imagine – to love and serve our kids well. If you are interested in becoming a part of building our kids and youth ministries, please call the office and let us know!

Your Pastor,
Bob Bjerkaas
