The 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation!

It was in October of 1517 that Martin Luther’s 95 Theses were posted on the door of the church in Wittenberg.  While the Reformation did not actually begin at that moment, that event was a tipping point of sorts.  The many reform movements that were underway in the years and even decades leading up to what we call the Reformation came into a focus, assumed a sense of urgency, and became so widely discussed that there could be no turning back!  The desire for reform would no longer be effectively resisted and the Protestant church today looks back with gratitude on the men and women who helped to shape the movement that, more than anything else, was essentially a recovery of Biblical doctrine in those area that most significantly determine the health of the Church.

This summer, here at Church in the Canyon, we will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation by reminding ourselves of the importance of the five key doctrines that form the essential doctrines of the Reformation.  These are generally referred to as the five “solas” of the Reformation.  Hanging in our church sanctuary, we have banners declaring these five solas in both Latin and in English.

Sola Gratia – Only Grace

Sola Fide – Only Faith

Solus Christus – Only Christ

Sola Scriptura – Only Scripture

Soli Deo Gloria – Only God’s Glory

On August 13, we will begin a ten week series in which two Sundays are devoted to each of these great doctrines.  The sermons will be preached by guest preachers who will be a tremendous blessing to us as we are reminded of the core commitments of our understanding of what faith, grace, scripture, Christ, and the pursuit of God’s glory really are!
